Clogged sinuses and unsuccessful Neti Pot

I have a cold and my sinuses are so blocked that my Neti Pot isn't working. I can only get a few drops of water to come out before the water stops moving at all.

Taking a hot shower first helps a little, but not much. What else can I try?

Sometimes when I'm really congested everything is so swollen the water can't get through. I've had luck with using cool (not cold) water instead of warm in the neti pot, and also with putting a cool compress on my face for a while ahead of time.

I am prone to sinus infections, and aside from using my neti pot and steamy water, I lay a hot/wet cloth over my face and it helps get things moving.

When I get extremely stuffy, I eat tons of spicy food. It seems to help everything loosen up.

Maybe if you use the neti pot while you're in the hot shower instead of afterwards? If a hot shower helps clear your sinuses, the water from the neti pot will have the best chance of getting through then.

I use a saline spray first when I am really congested. I have one by, I think the brand is Ayr, that has eucalyptus in it. I give myself a few squirts, do a forward bend to get it up in my sinus', and then blow my nose. That usually loosens the mucus enough for me.

If that doesn't work, I take a hot shower or sit over my humidifier.

Fill a bowl with hot, steamy water (I just fill the sink in my vanity). Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Place towel over head and breathe in the steam.

That is exactly what I do. I had a horrible sinus infection caused by a diving injury and this helped a lot.

I got one from breathing way too much sawdust and paint stripper fumes whilst remodeling our kitchen. (Yes I wore a mask most of the time but it wasn't a strong enough one for me.)

The eucalyptus steams really helped. I also kept the bottle with me during the day. When I started to feel clogged up I'd put a drop or two on my hands and then breathe through them for a while. It really helped.

keep trying the neti pot, you will eventually clear it enough to get things going. sometimes I have to try up to 10 times to get things started. once things start, if I was really blocked, I'm able to get some nasty stuff out, which really helps.

spicy foods will clear you out. ginger, garlic, cayenne pepper are good for this. if you can stomach it, eat a raw clove of garlic (this works for me every time). i also brew a ginger drink and add some honey, a squirt of lemon juice, and a dash of cayenne, which works really well. once this loosens you up, you should be able to use the neti pot successfully.

Try a Goldenseal nasal spray directly or in the saline water with you neti pot to calm down some of the inflammation in your sinuses. You should be able to find one at any health food store. I had a sinus infection from hell and couldn't take antibiotics (long story) and this really helped.
