Homemade sunblock?

Hi there
Does anyone have experience making their own sunblock? I bought generic zinc oxide ointment from the drugstore that is 20% zinc oxide in mineral oil, white beeswax, and white petrolatum. Does anyone have any idea of what else id mix it with for a non-greasy sunscreen? I'd prefer to make it from scratch.. not with oil free generic lotion or anything like that. Thanks ahead of time! This could really help me save on sunblock (2 bucks for zinc oxide cream as opposed to 10-15 for zinc oxide sunblock)

Its hard to make it grease free with out adding lots of nasty chemicals. The best thing to do is cover up. Wear white long sleeve shirts (white reflects all sun light), long pants and a hat.

I've mixed titanium dioxide and zinc with jojoba oil, but there is no way to measure the SPF of this. I get the titanium dioxide and zinc in a theatrical supply store, as clown makeup powder.

I'd add liquid bronze tint to it to give it some color, so you don't end up clown white - which is also a problem with some prepared sunscreens.

Yeah I'm thinking of infusing some water with turmeric and adding what is sure to be very yellow water to it

Do you need a sunscreen?
Are you especially pale?

There is a direct correlation between the use of sun-screen and it's UV blocking properties, and an increase in organ cancers that far outnumbers the skin cancers it protects us from.

Dermatologists tell us to use sunscreen, it's their job to keep us looking good. Oncologists have very different advice and it's their job to keep us from dying from cancer.

Re: Do you need a sunscreen?
which types of sunscreens are you talking about, chemical or mineral? the two are vastly different.

Re: Do you need a sunscreen?
It doesn't matter. It isn't that sunscreen causing the organ cancers- it's the lack of UV on the skin.

Oh trust me I get enough UV, I only use sunblock after I've been outside 20-30 minutes.

Are you breakout prone at all? Because I guarantee you putting that formula (mineral oil, beeswax, and petrolatum) on my face would cause a huge outbreak of cystic acne. Way too many skin-unfriendly ingredients there. If you want a natural sunscreen, try alba botanica. Shiseido makes great nongreasy zinc sunscreens though.

Yeah.. I can't use this stuff on my face. I'll probably buy a good natural sunscreen for my face and use this stuff everywhere else. Jeez.. mineral oil, it's like asking for a breakout.
